Supplyco Stores: Supplyco Stores Shortage in Kochi: Impact on Subsidized
On reaching the store in Gandhi Nagar, she was disappointed to see that the shop did not have enough stocks of essential items to run a household. “I used to regularly purchase products from Supplyco, but most of the essential items are not available now at the store,” said Shanthamma, who had spent more than Rs 50 on the auto. Like Shanthamma, numerous people have been returning home empty-handed from several Supplyco stores in the city for the last few weeks as they have run out of items like rice, pulses, and sugar.
At a few stores, however, 17 to 20 sacks of K-Rice that cost Rs 4 more than the subsidized rice arrived a few days ago. “This will get sold out in a day and we don’t know how long it will take before the next stock arrives at the store,” said a Supplyco staff. Few stores had Matta rice in limited stock as well as coconut oil.
As the subsidized items are not available, the overall sales have also reduced, with most stores wearing a deserted look. “We only have coconut oil for the cardholders at subsidized rates. Although we have been told that all stocks will be replenished soon, we don’t know when that will happen,” said a staff at a Supplyco unit in Palarivattom.
Customers complained that the unavailability of subsidized food items is leading to increased family expenditure. “With no subsidized products available now, my family’s monthly expenses have increased. We are not sure how long we will be able to go on,” said Priyan, a customer.
