Apple (AAPL) introduced new MacBook Air laptops Monday with its latest M3 chip, which the company says will allow the MacBook Air to run faster than with older Apple and Intel (INTC) chips.
The company launched the M3 in October for its iMac desktop computers and MacBook Pro laptops. Apple said that the M3 will make the MacBook Air up to 60% faster than those with its original M1 chip, and up to 13 times faster than the fastest Intel-based MacBook Air.
Apple also is hoping to take advantage of the soaring demand for artificial intelligence (AI). In its release, the company said that “every Mac is a great platform for AI,” and the MacBook Air is “the world’s best consumer laptop for AI.” Last week, Apple reportedly canceled its electric vehicle (EV) plans as it shifts its focus toward AI initiatives.
The price of the new M3-powered MacBook Air with a 13-inch screen will begin at $1,099, while the 15-inch model will start at $1,299. Apple said that customers can order them now, with first deliveries coming this Friday.
Shares of Apple slipped about 3% in intraday trading as of about noon ET Monday as European regulators fined the tech giant nearly $2 billion over charges of violating antitrust rules, though they’ve gained more than 13% over the past year.
